たしかに悟った龍馬の目の前に

海舟仕込みで

龍馬はゆくぞ西東
人を説くには理屈では足りぬ
そこには利益という
花を咲かせて
共に喜び　栄える道を作るのだ
どんな身分であろうとも
会う人皆が
皆が龍馬に惹かれゆく

龍馬は、「神戸海軍操練所」、及び、
海舟の「海軍塾」設立のために大いに働き、塾頭に任命され、
海舟の使者として各地を奔走。人に会い、人を動かした。
薩摩の大南洲西郷隆盛にも初めて会った。
やがて操練所と塾が廃止となったのちの慶応元年、
龍馬は長崎に「亀山社中」を作った。これは、
日本初の“株式会社”ともいえる。
そこに働くのは主に操練所出身の若者たち。この社中は、
薩摩藩などからの援助による資金によって商いをし、人を育てた。
そしてまた、この社中を作った龍馬の目的のひとつは、
薩摩藩と長州藩に同盟を結ばせ、幕府を倒し、朝廷の権威を回復させ、
新しい日本を作ることであった。
のちに「亀山社中」は土佐藩の援助となり、「海援隊」と名を変える。

この間(かん)、国の歴史は動いていた。政変、禁門の変、
幕府による長州征伐によって、長州はあわれ窮地にあり。
時は熟しぬいていた。薩長の同盟は急がれた。
慶応元年五月になって、龍馬は西郷、小松帯刀と会い、更に、
桂小五郎とも会って、薩長和解について話し合う。
そして龍馬は、長州が幕府の命で武器を調達できないことから、
亀山社中を仲買役とし、
長崎グラバー商会から薩摩藩名義で武器と軍艦買い入れて、
それを長州に転売す。
長州から薩摩へは、兵糧米を送るように提案し、長州が快諾す。
さてもさても龍馬の働きにより、薩長の同盟への道は確かに整ったり。

慶応二年一月、西郷隆盛と桂小五郎はいよいよ会った。
しかし、薩長同盟締結にたどり着けない。
その原因は、西郷と桂の両人が抱えて悩む、藩と藩との哀しい過去と憤り。
いざや、それを断ち切って、この同盟の申し入れ、どちらが先に動くのか。
だが、時は経てどもお互いに、心を解かず、言い出さず、
さてこそこの大切な同盟話、崩れ去るかと見えた時、
龍馬はそれぞれの元へ走った。

「小五郎！いつまで自分の藩の事ばっかりに縛られゆうがじゃ。
わかっちゅうろう。大事なのは、この先の日本ぜよ」
「西郷君、桂も、この国の行く先を思うちゅう心は同(おんな)じじゃ。
さ、決断しとうせ。時こそ、時こそ今ぜよ！」
